Statement from AARP Maine Concerning Question 2, Medicaid Expansion Initiative (2017)

PORTLAND: Today AARP Maine issued the following statement concerning the Welfare to Work PAC Medicaid expansion television ad:

“While AARP Maine has not taken a position on Question 2, Medicaid Expansion Initiative (2017), we feel compelled to respond to the inaccuracy of the Welfare to Work PAC television ad currently running in Maine.  AARP Maine is concerned that it will scare Maine seniors with false statements that Medicaid expansion will ‘take state resources away from nursing homes’ and that ‘nursing homes and senior citizens [will] suffer.’

These claims are inaccurate.  Multiple independent fact checkers such as Politifact and nonpartisan analysts including the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) have confirmed that there is no connection between Medicaid expansion and waiting lists for long-term care services for the aged and disabled including nursing homes and home and community-based services (HCBS). In fact, the vast majority of states without HCBS waiting lists have expanded Medicaid.  According to the KFF report Data Note: Data Do Not Support Relationship Between States’ Medicaid Expansion Status and Home and Community-Based Services Waiver Waiting Lists, ‘Most expansion states had no HCBS waiver waiting list or a decrease from 2014 to 2015, while most non-expansion states had a [HCBS] waiting list increase.’
