AARP reminds North Dakotans on tight budgets that they may be eligible for help with heating costs. The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) offers a weatherization program and cash to help pay utility bills.
About 10 percent of North Dakotans 65 and older live in poverty, according to U.S. Census data. Some cut back on other necessities, such as groceries or prescription drugs, to keep the heat on in winter.
Individuals with less than $28,313 in annual income and couples with less than $37,025 may be eligible for LIHEAP—but only until its annual funding runs out. To apply, go to nd.gov/dhs/services/financialhelp/energyassist.html or call 800-755-2716.
