A Step in the Right Direction for Better Transportation and Communities

Consider this: Men outlive their driving years by about six years; women, by about ten years. How will this growing population ensure access to doctor visits, supermarkets and even social events. Will they become isolated?

That’s why AARP supported the passage of Senate Bill 130 with a coalition that includes the YMCA of Delaware, Nemours Health and the American Heart Association. Recently signed by Governor Markell, the bill promotes transit-oriented development, which allows local government to create Complete Community Enterprise Districts. These Districts are designed to encourage public transportation, walkability and safe biking. Ultimately, the bill will be the impetus behind more livable communities in Delaware.

Municipalities, cities, towns, or districts can enter into an agreement with Delaware’s Department of Transportation to create transportation-friendly areas. By adjusting the zoning, it becomes possible to develop “transportation hubs,” where housing, services and more are all designed around a central form transportation.

In addition to making Delaware more age-friendly and livable, the legislation will also bring jobs to Delaware. Increasingly, corporations are choosing locations with transportation options and amenities within walking distance attract talented workers.

AARP believes legislation like this will make life better for Delawareans by creating more transportation options to ensure residents can live healthy, successful lives in their own homes for as long as possible. We applaud the Senate, House and Governor Markell for passing Senate Bill 130.
