Students Host 'Prom' for Seniors

king and queen

National Honor Society students at Green Mountain High School hosted a Senior (Citizen) Prom recently at Lakewood Estates Retirement Community.

Student volunteers transformed the lobby area of the retirement home into a cheerful Hawaiian atmosphere. Student disc jockey James Grebb played big band, swing and other tunes familiar to the older generation.

Residents, students, and guests danced and laughed together. There were several generations present, including an 8-year-old girl who came to spend the evening with her great grandmother, and a woman who celebrated her 96 th birthday that day.

Throughout the evening, numerous students showcased their talent by presenting songs, instrument solos, and a modern dance. The retirement home generously provided pizza, cookies, and beverages for all. The festive night concluded with the crowning of an elderly prom king and queen under a blast of confetti.

Student organizers Leilani McGaha and Hayley Upson planned the event to show senior citizens that adolescents not only care about the elderly, but want to interact with them. Leilani shared that her favorite part of the evening was dancing with an elderly man who was so good that she had to stop and catch her breath! Hayley stated that she enjoyed seeing how excited the residents were and how much they appreciated the event. Both girls agreed that the bonding time was invaluable and the beaming faces of the residents were priceless.

McGaha and Upson wish to thank Lakewood Estates activities director Bethany Bowles, teachers Miles Schwartz, Dave Gleason and Carla Hawley, and their fellow students for their support in orchestrating a successful event. In the end, both residents and students heartily agreed that this was a prom to cherish for a lifetime!
