AARP and Denver Public Library (DPL) are working together to select and identify 100 photos that depict the powerful events and people that reflect the Chicano movement in Colorado. The photographs will be digitized and accessible online through DPL’s Digital Collections.

“This is really a great opportunity for Coloradans who witnessed the events of El Movimiento en Colorado first hand in the 1960s and 70s to share their story and enrich the state’s historical offerings at the same time,” said Roberto Rey, AARP Director of Multicultural Outreach. “AARP encourages everyone to look through your photos and consider sharing your journey.”

Research has shown that photographs represent one of the richest sources of documenting history. The photos that depict “El Movimiento” will be a resource accessible to youth, educational institutions and the general public and will allow them to peer into the past, to share the memories and come to better understand the Chicano Movement in Colorado. To enhance and broaden authentic perceptions of this important time in history, we are requesting, from the wider Latino community, photographs reminiscent of the experiences and memories of these significant historic years in Colorado.

Because original photographs are precious and valuable, when requested, original photos will be returned to the owner after digitizing.

We want to thank you in advance for your generous help in developing a photographic collection of that opens a window for students, educators, and your children and grandchildren to peer into the past of Colorado’s Chicano history.

Ideas for El Movimiento photos include the following:
• People active in events from “locations all around” Colorado
• State Representatives and Senators elected through efforts of Chicano Power
• Women
• Youth:
o National Chicano Youth Liberation Conference
o West High School Walkout
• Photos used from the 2013 History Colorado Chicano Movement event
• Oral history project photographs
