Summer 2017 is finally here! We are excited to send you our latest e-newsletter about our work in Maine and hope you will stay in touch with us in the months ahead.

I want to begin this edition by acknowledging those of you who have contacted us with your questions and concerns over proposals included in the American Health Care Act (AHCA).  The bill passed the House of Representatives several weeks ago and now awaits action in the Senate.  AARP strongly opposes this legislation because of the negative impact it will have on millions of older Americans across the country including hundreds of thousands of Mainers.  You can read our latest recap of the AHCA here.  Time is of the essence for us to raise our voices on this critical bill and we hope you will take the time to contact Maine’s Senators.  AARP considers their vote on the AHCA an “accountability vote” – one that we will track and report to our members across the country.

At this time of year, we also hope to hear from you with your nominations for our annual volunteer award.  Named after our founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, the Andrus Award honors those who are making a difference in their communities through volunteerism and service.  Please take a look at our nomination form and make sure you send it in before the July 1 deadline.

If you are following our work on advancing age-friendly communities, you’ll be interested to know that several additional Maine towns have joined the Network of Age-Friendly Communities bringing our total to almost 40.  We continue to boast more age-friendly communities than any other state in the nation and are inspired by the initiatives that are already underway in towns large and small throughout Maine.

We hope you will join us at our member social events which will continue throughout the summer. If you are in Portland, Augusta, Bangor, Waterville, York, or Brunswick, check out our latest opportunities to connect with AARP members in your area. You have shared that you enjoy these opportunities and we hope to see you soon!  Please feel free to bring a friend the next time you attend.

We are also delighted to present our free speaker series Dirigo Speaks featuring wonderful speakers including best-selling authors and community leaders.  PLEASE NOTE: We regret that due to the author’s battle with cancer, the event with Anita Shreve scheduled for June 29th has been cancelled.  We hope you will join us for other events in the series.

If you are interested in working with us on our campaigns or community outreach, please let us know. As always, we love hearing from you. We also welcome your feedback and ideas, so please stay in touch!

Wishing you and your family all the best,

Lori
