Thousands of Michigan veterans hungry for benefit information

Veterans expo Detroit Nov 2014

Thousands of Michigan veterans listened in on an AARP tele-town hall that provided details about a wide range of veterans' benefits.

The hour-long call featured expert information from Robert Price, a retired Army veteran and acting director for targeted outreach with the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

Participants had myriad questions about the complex web of veterans' benefits and how the rules and regulations affect their individual circumstances. Some expressed appreciation to AARP for providing the service.

"I really feel like we made a difference today," said Melissa Seifert, AARP Michigan Associate State Director for Advocacy, who moderated the tele-town hall. "We gave Michigan veterans a lot of valuable information and we established a strong partnership with the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs."

Polls conducted during the call indicated 8 in 10 participants were from veteran households and a similar proportion said they would like to receive more information about veterans' benefits.

During the weekend preceding the tele-town hall, AARP staff and volunteers worked an information table at the Veterans Expo in Detroit.
