AARP Louisiana is encouraging state residents who need health insurance to check out the online marketplace, which opened Oct. 1.

Created by the Affordable Care Act, the marketplace gives consumers a way to compare plans and apply for tax credits to help cover insurance costs. The plans offered could help the 16 percent of Louisianans ages 50 to 64 who are are uninsured—as well as those who are paying too much for private insurance or who previously were denied coverage because of preexisting conditions.

Shoppers can connect with a health insurance “navigator” at healthcare.gov or 800-318-2596. AARP offers guidance  at healthlawfacts.org.
