James Thibodeau, Senior Counsel with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), will be giving two presentations, "Investing for Seniors" and "Pyramid Schemes" on May 24th from 6:00pm--7:30pm at AARP Utah's office.  The general public is invited to join us--you need not be a member of AARP or 50+ to attend.

The SEC is the nation's top regulator of securities and brokers, bringing enforcement actions against fraud, abuse, and unfair and deceptive practices.  Mr. Thibodeau's  presentation on "Pyramid Schemes" will focus on scams in which proceeds are collected from investors who in turn solicit other investors with promises of big returns, creating a pyramid in which only the investors at the top of the pyramid are paid. The scheme collapses when there is no money left to pay the multiple  number of investors at the bottom of the pyramid.

He will also present information on "Investing for Seniors" that will highlight strategies investors should take into consideration later in life to preserve income for retirement.  Various products will be explained with time for questions from the audience.

The Utah Division of Securities is the state counterpart to the SEC.  For a DVD with information presented by Division Director Keith Woodwell, as well as a presentation on brain fitness by Dr. Kevin Duff of the University of Utah's Brain Institute, e-mail us at utaarp@aarp.org with your name and address, and a copy will be mailed to you at no charge.

These presentations are part of AARP's educational outreach efforts on financial security.  More information on saving, investing, retirement, and consumer protection can be found at aarp.org/money.  To request a presentation from AARP Utah on these topics, contact Jill Duke, Community Outreach Director, at 801-567-2642.
