Gain Real Work Experience with an AARP Virginia Communications Internship

Communications Intern - AARP Virginia – Summer 2016

 

Reporting directly to the Associate Director, Communications, the intern will provide communications support for state and federal advocacy campaigns, voter education, anti-hunger and other local initiatives.  Intern will help staff communicate with AARP members, media and the public, focusing on digital media channels. Intern will develop content for state office webpage, social media sites, member emails and e-newsletters, prepare and distribute news releases and make media calls.

 

Intern must be available at least 20 hours per week, should be able to stay at the office for at least 4 hours at a time and must be able to be in the office by 9 a.m. on a Monday or a Tuesday.  Intern may be asked to participate in local events throughout Virginia and will be reimbursed for travel.  The office is located in downtown Richmond.

 

Candidate must be self-motivated, collaborative, be able to learn quickly and take directions well.  Must be able to work independently and make decisions regarding editorial content under the supervision of the Associate State Director.  The primary nature of interaction is coordinative with AARP Virginia state office staff and volunteers.  The intern is a vital supportive role to AARP Virginia’s advocacy communications projects.  The intern will work directly with the Associate State Director for Communications to complete tasks related to dashboard goals. 

 

This is a great opportunity for the ideal intern to develop solid work experience with the largest social welfare organization in the country while contributing to projects that impact our members who are 50Plus.  

 

The intern must be in their junior or senior year, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or Political Science.  A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Proficiency with social media (including Facebook and Twitter) is required.  Experience with platforms such as Hootsuite and Spredfast are helpful.  Experience with WordPress preferred.  Experience conducting research, editing photos and writing press releases a plus.  Must have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Word and PowerPoint. Interest in aging, communications/public relations and political issues helpful. Background and drug screening may be required prior to employment.
