AARP Virginia is offering “Home Fit” workshops to help people modify their residences before a fall or other crisis occurs. Fixes can range from putting a nonslip mat in the bath to installing handrails and making doorways wide enough for a wheelchair to pass.
Virginia ranks 12th in the nation in the number of households with one or more residents age 50-plus, and 32 percent of those households have at least one person with a disability, according to an AARP study.
