No Holiday for Fraud

Print

The holidays should be full of joy and cheer, but AARP Virginia warns that the season may be rife with scams.

A con artist may email you pretending to be a grandchild stranded and in need of money. A fraudster pretending to be with the IRS may call to threaten jail time unless you pay back taxes, which you don’t really owe.

“Porch pirates” may steal holiday packages from your doorstep, and fake charities may try to cash in on your generosity. More than two-thirds of respondents in an AARP study said they didn’t check out a charity before donating.

Don’t let scammers ruin your holiday. Visit fraudwatchnetwork.org or call 877-908-3360 toll-free for tips or to report scams. Contact TIGTA (Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration) to report the call. Use their “IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting” web page. You can also call 800-366-4484.
