Recognizing the need for alternative transportation options, Mountain Line Transit Authority has announced the implementation of a new Volunteer Driver Program in Monongalia, Marion and Preston counties.

Mountain Line  serves as the provider of public transportation in Morgantown, West Virginia and the surrounding area, and is currently recruiting drivers, 25 years and older, who are interested in becoming community champions providing vital, life-enhancing transportation services.

Under the Volunteer Driver Program, drivers use their own personal vehicle to transport passengers. Drivers must maintain their own auto insurance coverage, consistent with state insurance requirements. Mountain Line Transit would provide additional insurance coverage when approved services are provided with the Volunteer Driver Program. Volunteers are also eligible for mileage reimbursement under the program.

Being a Volunteer Driver, you can set your own schedule, times and distances that you are willing to travel. Passenger destinations may include non-emergency trips to: medical facilities, doctor to dental visits, pharmacies, grocery stores, etc.

"We want volunteers to know that they are never obligated to do more driving than what they volunteer to do, and to never underestimate their role as a volunteer driver," said Kellie LaNeve, Mountain Line Transit mobility coordinator. "In many cases, our volunteer driver may be the only individual who sees a specific individual on that particularly day."

To become a Volunteer Driver, you must have a valid West Virginia state license, state inspection and current insurance. For the safety of all involved, drivers must agree to undergo background and driver record checks, agree to keep passenger information confidential and complete training provided by Mountain Line.

For more information, contact Kelli LaNeve at 304.296.3680, email mobility@busride.org, or visit Mountain Line Transit online at www.busride.org.
