AARP Colorado is seeking a new volunteer State President to be the chief volunteer ambassador of the nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, representing Colorado.

The role of the AARP Colorado State President is in partnership with the AARP Colorado State Director, who leads the AARP Colorado office. The State President and the State Director work in collaboration with other appropriate volunteers and staff. The State President positions AARP in Colorado to achieve the AARP vision, mission and strategic priorities. The State President will be governed by the policies and procedures of the AARP association.

Responsibilities, qualifications and other requirements for this position include the following:

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the principal AARP volunteer spokesperson in the state, communicating AARP messages statewide.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship and partnership with the State Director.
  • In partnership with the State Director, provides vision and leadership to AARP activities.
  • Chairs the state Executive Council and is responsible for fully engaging members of the Executive Council in the work of the state office.
  • In partnership with the State Director and the Executive Council, offers state-specific insights to shape the state strategic thinking and the development of the state plan in concert with AARP’s visions and goals.
  • Develops a strong working knowledge of the state demographics, organizational structures, political environment and key players.
  • In partnership with the State Director, builds networks and community partnerships across the state with other organizations and key decision makers to further AARP goals.
  • Seeks input for planning from AARP volunteers and external organizations.
  • Understands and communicates AARP policy.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to engage diverse populations in all activities in the state.
  • Assists in recruitment of other volunteers, including working with staff to support, onboard and develop volunteers and volunteer leaders. In partnership with the State Director, appoints Executive Council members and state-appointed volunteers.
  • Participates in the annual selection of the state’s Andrus Award for Community Service winner.
  • Conducts annual progress reviews based on an established work plan for Executive Council members.
  • Shares insights and information with the Regional Volunteer Director to ensure the RVD has an understanding of state work and a region-wide view of the work.
  • Works collaboratively with the Regional Volunteer Director, Regional Volunteer President and State Presidents in the region to deliver on behalf of AARP.

Qualifications

  • AARP membership required.
  • Committed to the goals and priorities of AARP.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and planning abilities.
  • Leadership and team building ability.
  • Ability to engage and work well with diverse populations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills-understanding of group dynamics and skill in facilitating groups.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Human Resource Management Skills- interviewing, selection, coaching, and conflict management.

Term of Service

Two years with option by supervisor to renew twice, not to exceed six years.

Training Required

Orientation to AARP.

Other skills training and issue briefings as necessary.

Travel Required

Travel as necessary throughout the state, or to meetings or trainings out of state.

Appointed By

State Director.

Supervisor

Works under the direction of the State Director.

Scope of Authority

Supervises volunteer Executive Council members.

Progress Review

The performance of the State President will be monitored on an ongoing basis by the State Director according to policy guidelines. Annually, the State Director and the State President will assess progress and identify opportunities to strengthen the state work with volunteers and the State Director/State President partnership.

Available Resources

AARP will provide volunteer travel accident insurance and commercial general liability insurance while performing volunteer responsibilities. Travel expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with existing AARP policies. AARP will provide a phone and/ or iPad for AARP business and other resources as needed to support the State President in his/her role.
