Help people and give your mind a workout, too…..

An aggressive, new campaign begins this fall to recruit at least 100 additional Tax-Aide Volunteers across Kansas. Almost 400 volunteers strong now, the program still needs many more counselors, facilitators, and leaders to meet the growing demand for its services – to prepare and e-file accurate income tax returns at no charge for individuals and families with low to moderate income - with special attention to those ages 60 and older.

“If you are not afraid of people, computers, tax returns, challenges, and learning new things - We Want You,” said AARP Kansas State Tax-Aide Coordinator Steve Robbins.

Volunteers do not need to be an AARP member or retiree to participate. Those interested in becoming certified counselors do need to have basic computer skills and the personal drive necessary to learn and become proficient with new tax return preparation software provided by the IRS. Counselors receive comprehensive tax training, and are provided access to all computer equipment required. All Tax-Aide volunteers are reimbursed on a limited basis for qualified program-related expenses.

Kansas Tax-Aide volunteers prepared more than 18,000 Federal returns and 19,000 State returns last season at 77 sites across the state. Tax law training, along with tax software and site equipment configuration, begins later this year. Actual volunteer tax preparation services will be offered from February 1 through April 15 in 2016.

Robbins adds, “Please consider joining our dedicated team, as we help thousands of families across the state each year.”
