Week Four at the Legislature: Bill to Help Workers Save for Retirement on the Move

Danny Harris Feb 2012 edt
AARP Utah Advocacy Director Danny Harris

MORE WORKERS WILL GET ACCESS TO RETIREMENT SAVINGS VEHICLES UNDER SB133

We are excited that SB133, Small Employer Retirement Program, is expected to receive a vote from the Utah Senate within the next few days. This bill will help provide access to retirement savings vehicles for more of Utah’s workers. Currently, more than half of Utah’s private-sector workers don’t have a way to save for retirement at work.  SB133 would help reduce that problem by having the state manage the review, selection and administration of private-market plans making it easy for both the employer and employee to take advantage of a competitive IRA savings plan offered in the workplace.

We need your help to urge the Senate to support this bill which will help more Utahns be financially prepared for retirement. Follow this link and take 2 minutes to send a message to your state senator in support of this program. A draft message has already been prepared for you.

The Senate could vote on this as early as today or tomorrow so make sure your voice is heard by sending a message now. And, as always, once you have sent your message make sure you encourage friends and family to do the same.

Letter to Legislators

Dear (Senator),

As your constituent, I urge you to support SB 133, Small Employer Retirement Program, when the Senate votes on it this week.

Right now, more than half of private-sector workers in Utah don’t have a way to save for retirement and are in danger of not having enough resources to help them live independently as the age. This will also mean that more and more Utahns will likely be reliant on government services in retirement just to help them get by.

SB 133 helps address this problem by making it easier for small businesses to offer their employees a way to save at work. By helping more of Utah’s workers save throughout their career, we can help them be more self-sufficient in retirement and reduce the impact on Utah’s taxpayers at the same time.

Again, please support SB 133, Small Employer Retirement Program, when you vote on it this week.
