There’s nothing more satisfying in life than knowing that you are making a difference – either in your chosen career, or as a volunteer. Besides bringing meaning to life, volunteering your time and talents can also provide these benefits:

  • Staying active and involved. People who get up off the couch and do something are healthier both physically and mentally, and have a much happier outlook on life.
  • Meeting people. I retired a few years ago, and although I love not having to get up early and wear a necktie, I miss the interaction involved in working with others. Volunteering offers the perfect way for you to keep in touch with old friends and meet new ones.
  • “Giving back”. Living a comfortable lifestyle in retirement is often the result of the tremendous opportunities that your community provided you – especially early in your career. Making a contribution to your community ensures that future generations will enjoy those same benefits.

So if you’re looking for opportunities to volunteer, here are a few suggestions to consider:

AARP Sioux Falls events. Whether it’s a night of Canaries baseball or Harlem Globetrotters basketball, dinner and a show at the Orpheum, or music and wine at the winery, AARP can always use help with the myriad of tasks necessary to put on a successful event. If you have an interest in being “part of the crew”, let us know.

Sioux Falls city government. Did you know that Sioux Falls has more than 40 citizen boards and commissions that advise the mayor and city council on a variety of issues? And they are almost always looking for qualified volunteers to serve! Right now, over a dozen such boards have vacancies, including the Board of Health, Commission on Human Relations, Disability Awareness Commission, Housing and Redevelopment Commission, Public Transit Advisory Board and the Parks and Recreation Board.

Those 50 and older bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table.  We bring an important perspective in shaping the future of Sioux Falls for our families and the city’s residents of every age.   Not sure where to plug in?   We can help.   Send us an email and we can help match you with a committee or board that meets your interest and strengths.
