As AARP Michigan gears up for this year’s version of You’ve Earned a Say, at least one factor will remain constant from our highly successful 2012 YEAS effort: Volunteers again will play an essential role.

You’ve Earned a Say is all about engaging affected citizens in protecting and strengthening Medicare and Social Security for current and future beneficiaries. It’s extremely important work. Well over a million Michiganders rely on these vital programs.

Last year, volunteers and staff held more than 50 events, ranging from neighborhood coffee klatches, to large-scale discussions with 100 or more participants at churches, auditoriums and conference centers. Most of these gatherings were led by volunteers. The larger events were staffed by volunteers.

This year, we will again look to volunteers to lead conversations across the state about the long-term stability of Social Security and Medicare.

Our active volunteers also will be asked to distribute materials and staff tables at community events, write letters to the editor of their local newspapers, participate in phone-banking and attend congressional town halls and other in-district events to carry our YEAS messages to policy makers.

Volunteer training for YEAS will kick off at AARP College this month in Ypsilanti. In addition, we’re planning smaller training sessions later in the year.

AARP continues to fight on issues like these that matter to you and your family. Let us know whether you’re interested in joining us in this critical fight.
