for Caregivers

Author of The Unbroken Circle, James L. Brooks, M. Div, Associate State Director, AARP Virginia will speak at the Caregiver Workshop May 17 in Alexandria.  The session on Navigating the Modern Medical Maze for Caregivers will offer strategies and tools that anyone can use to plan care at home and advocate effectively for themselves or others.

“Caring for a family member or friend during illness is one of the greatest gifts you can give; however, at times it can seem overwhelming.“ Brooks said.  “The more family caregivers equip themselves with caregiving skills and support, the more they improve quality of life for the people they care for and themselves.”

The public is invited to join Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. for an afternoon of learning and appreciation for family caregivers and volunteers in elder care. The workshop is from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at the Charles Beatley Library 5005 Duke St., Alexandria, VA 22304. Participants will also be entered to win prizes.

Family caregivers, people living with illness and professionals often find navigating the modern medical maze incredibly challenging. Brooks will cover advances in medical treatment and walk participants through patient advocacy styles, communication strategies, system navigation tips and ways to spark meaningful change.
