2018 Black History Month Integrated Campaign

While AARP strives to develop a year-round appreciation of Black life, culture and history, each year there are key dates and observances that are deserving of special commemoration. Among these is Black History Month.

Background
Black History Month, also known as African-American History Month in America, is an annual observance in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated annually in the United States in February. Themes
The theme for our observance of Black History Month (BHM) is acknowledging and celebrating African Americans and Blacks who have achieved extraordinary accomplishments at age 50 and over.

Strategies
Strategies that will comprise the campaign this year include:

  • BHM Media Campaign, featuring “Grad Granny & Grad Grandpa” and “You Did What at 50?";
  • Movies for Grownups national screening of Black Panther in 80+ markets;
  • Black History Month Workshops – a test ‘n learn program to celebrate Black History Month in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and New York;
  • Create the Good Dream Builders Video Contest – the contest invites individuals to share a “dream” volunteer project they are currently working on—or want to carry out—in collaboration with a community nonprofit;
  • Discounted AARP Online Driver Safety Course – a 25% discount on the award-winning AARP Smart DriverTM online course throughout the entire month of February;
  • Special Membership Offer – visit www.aarp.org/blackcommunity or call 800-516-5845 for a 25% discount open to all current and eligible members to join and/or renew during the entire month of February; and
  • African American/Black Faith-Based Initiative Tool Kit – special emphasis on promoting an online, self-service tool kit for faith leaders to develop and implement adult AA/B 50+ ministry for their constituents.
