Dr. Sandra Simmons, a veteran AARP Michigan Driver Safety instructor from Midland, has been selected to receive the Richard H. Austin Traffic Safety Award.

The Governor's Traffic Safety Advisory Committee recently announced the honor, which is for long-term contributions and commitment to traffic safety.

"The AARP Michigan Driver Safety Program is proud of Dr. Sandra Simmons' accomplishments in the 14 years she has been with the program," said Cynthia LaBelle, Michigan AARP Driver Safety State Coordinator.

"We are very happy that, in her retirement, Dr. Simmons has decided to volunteer with our program, bringing to seniors in central Michigan information to help them drive safer longer."

Simmons will receive her award on March 20 during the Office of Highway Safety Planning's Annual Michigan Traffic Safety Summit at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center in East Lansing.

AARP Driver Safety helps older drivers learn the new rules of the road and to continue to drive safely and remain independent for as long as possible. The Smart Driver Course covers proven driver safety strategies. Those who complete the course may qualify for auto insurance discounts.
