AARP Foundation Tax Aide Seeking Volunteers in All Roles

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. With the growing popularity of the program, AARP is looking for even more volunteers to join other compassionate and friendly individuals to assist.

Last year in North Carolina, over 1,100 tax aide volunteers at more than 100 sites helped 77,776 individuals save $7,402,793 in earned income tax credits. Unlike other tax services, AARP Tax Aide is free and available in person or online.

AARP North Carolina State Director Doug Dickerson explains, “AARP offers free tax preparation help to anyone, with special attention to older, low-income taxpayers. We understand that many individuals may miss out on credits and deductions they’ve earned because they can’t afford to pay for professional tax preparation. That’s why Tax Aide is so valuable when it comes to helping people keep more of the money they’ve earned.”

Dickerson added, “Tax Aide volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment. And, as our current volunteers tell us, you’ll not only learn new skills, but also get a great feeling from helping someone else. If you’re interested in making a difference in your community, we’ve got a role for you!”

AARP points out that Tax Aide volunteers don’t have to be tax or financial experts because there is a role for everybody. For example:

Good with the fine print? Be a volunteer tax preparer.

You'll work with taxpayers directly; filling out tax returns and helping them seek a refund. Experience isn't necessary — AARP provides training and IRS certification.

Love working with people? Be a client facilitator.

You'll welcome taxpayers, help organize their paperwork and manage the overall flow of service.
