AARP is not taking a position on the Maine Home Care Ballot Initiative.
AARP continues to lead the fight on access to home and community based services for older Mainers. We are working to continue improving the system we have, as opposed to creating a competing and confusing secondary one. We know that quality, impactful, legislation takes time and we’re willing to do the hard work this issue deserves to support older Mainers who want to remain in their homes and communities across Maine.
Using a payroll tax to pay for HCBS is an untested policy at the local level. We’ll continue to look into its potential impacts here in Maine making sure unproven policies don’t leave any Mainer behind or create unnecessary and costly inefficiencies. Caregivers and their loved ones need proven policies that deliver relief and that’s what AARP is working hard to deliver.
