Call it companionship at a discount.

AARP Michigan and the Michigan Humane Society have launched a new partnership to offer substantial savings on pet adoption fees – ranging from $55 to $190 -- to AARP members.

AARP members can simply present their membership card at any Michigan Humane Society adoption location to receive the discount for qualifying dogs and cats.

Those who want to sign up on the spot for AARP membership to get the discount can do so by calling toll-free (800) 566-0242 . They will receive a membership number over the phone.

Or, they can use their smart phones and apply for an instant membership online at http:// assets.aarp.org/www.aarp.org_/promotions/sem/member01.html

The goal of the partnership is to provide more people and pets the benefits of companionship, while helping animals in need of loving homes.

“It’s a win-win,” said Jacqueline Morrison, AARP Michigan State Director. “We’re pleased to offer this special discount to our members, and to help the Michigan Humane Society find great homes for these pets.”

CJ Bentley, senior director of operations for the Michigan Humane Society, commented: “This is really exciting. This is a first in the country.”

The fee discount applies to dogs and cats age 2 or older, and dogs 40 pounds or larger, regardless of age. Discounted adoption fees for cats will be $10, which is currently a savings of $55; and $100 for dogs, which is a savings of $90 to $190.

AARP members may utilize the discount for family members, but must be present and show their membership card at the time of adoption.

The Michigan Humane Society adoption package includes spay/neuter surgery and age-appropriate vaccinations.
