ARP New Mexico is once again looking to honor those individuals who have made a substantial contribution to New Mexico through their volunteer activities. The 2016 State Andrus Award for Community Service honors 50 plus New Mexicans who are sharing their experience, talent, and skills to help improve their communities.

Each year AARP New Mexico seeks out nominations from the state’s most outstanding volunteers – those individuals who best exemplify the role of its founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, whose motto still guides the organization today – To Serve, Not to be Served.

“At AARP, volunteers are an integral part of our team and the work that we do,” said Gene Varela, AARP New Mexico State Director. “We feel it is important to recognize the contributions that volunteers provide, not just for AARP but across our state.”

“The Andrus Award honors the volunteer who goes beyond just giving of their time but also has a deep impact on their community. Often the program or the work that they do would not take place if this individual didn’t step up with heart and passion to fill a need,” Varela said.

Nominations will be evaluated by a committee of AARP and community partner representatives and will be based on how the volunteer’s work has improved the community, supported AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers. The award recipient will be announced in the fall.

AARP New Mexico Andrus Award for Community Service nominees must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Nominee must be 50 years or older.
  • The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must have been performed on a volunteer basis, without pay.
  • The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must reflect AARP’s vision and mission.
  • Couples or partners who perform service together are also eligible; however, teams are not eligible.
  • This is not a posthumous award.
