AARP Southwest Virginia Team Gets to Work

BedfordPhotoSept2017

On Friday, September 15, 2017 representatives of Brian Jacks’ leadership teams from Roanoke, Lynchburg, Danville, and Blacksburg met at the Bedford, Virginia welcome center to share experiences with the Virtual News Team, We Want to Know, and the Speakers’ Bureau.  We discussed what has been done so far, what the expectations of team members are, and what we perceived the next steps to be.

Clarification of expectations of members of the Virtual Newsroom Volunteer team included setting protocol for ensuring a team member will cover AARP sponsored events. The WW2K team modeled for the group how the flat people are used as part of the program of asking questions to candidates for office in the upcoming election. Barry Butler, echoed by Brian, asked that when pictures are taken and articles are written they be sent either the day of the event or the day after.  Questions raised in the Speakers’ Bureau session included what kind of training speakers should have, what kind of support member of the bureau should expect, and to whom speakers should report at AARP Virginia.

If you are interested in having an AARP speaker at an event, contact us at snewcombe@aarp.org.  If you would like to join our volunteer team, contact nsnider@aarp.org.
