AARP’s Casper Community Action Group Looking for Volunteers

CHEYENNE - AARP Wyoming and its Casper Community Action group will hold a number of events in the Oil City over the next year, celebrating the work of those ages 50 and over. At 7 p.m. on June 21 at the Casper Senior Center, Casper’s AARP Community Action Group will hold a meeting to deploy its volunteers throughout the summer.  Anyone interested in learning more about upcoming projects and events is invited to attend the event.

Volunteers for AARP Wyoming can be of any age, especially AARP’s target demographic of 50 and over.

Check out this list of upcoming events and see if you might be interested in getting involved:

Frank Abagnale Fraud Watch Event:  AARP's Fraud Watch Network offers tips to avoid scams and fraud, avoid identity theft, and give resources to consumers against potential cons. On August 23, AARP’s Casper Community Action Group will host AARP Fraud Watch Network Ambassador Frank Abagnale in Casper. Abagnale, who earned international acclaim when the movie, “Catch Me If You Can,” was released in 2002, is now one of the world's most respected authorities on the subjects of forgery, embezzlement and secure documents. AARP Wyoming will need volunteers to help the night of the event, as well as the planning of the event through the spring and summer.

Movies For Grownups:  Movies for Grownups is a national effort in which AARP rents out a movie theatre and offers free admission, popcorn and soda for AARP members and others over age 50. Volunteers are needed during these events to check-in guests, as well as hand out tickets for snacks. Movies for Grownups events take place in Casper quarterly. Volunteers at Movies for Grownups events are encouraged to take in the movie as well.

NicFest:  AARP Wyoming is an exhibitor at the NicFest event in Casper each June. Volunteers in AARP’s shaded booth offer information about AARP Wyoming, and its initiatives such as advocacy at the state capitol for all Wyoming citizens ages 50 and over, caregiving, driver safety classes, and more. This year, the focus will be on Health and Wellness.   Volunteers are asked to sign up for two-hour shifts over two days.

Operation Stop Scams:   This event, tentatively set for July, allows the public the opportunity to bring outdated documents to a central location to be professionally shredded in an effort to fight off identity theft. Operation Stop Scams volunteers help collect the paper to be shredded at the shredding site over a course of three or four hours. Volunteering for Operation Stop Scams will involve a three or four hour commitment.

Age Friendly Casper Committee:  The AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities is part of an international effort launched in 2006 to help cities prepare for rapid population aging and the parallel trend of urbanization. An Age Friendly designation- which Casper earned in 2017- provides a community access to a global network of participating communities, as well as aging and civil society experts. Casper’s Age Friendly committee will meet several times this summer to discuss establishing a action plan  that identifies ways to make Casper even more livable and friendly to people of all ages. Volunteers for this committee are able to have their voice heard while discussing important topics such as: outdoor spaces and buildings; transportation; housing; social participation; respect and social inclusion;m civic participation and employment; communication and information; as well as community and health services.
