AARP's de los Ramos honored among Hispanic community

AARP Delaware’s own Carlos de los Ramos, Associate State Director for Community Outreach, has been named Distinguished Hispanic Delawareans by Delaware’s Latin American Community Center. He will receive the award at the Latin Center’s 46 th annual Grand Ball, “A Night in Cubs: A Celebration of a New Era” on Saturday October 10, 2015.

Among other festivities, the awards ceremony will honor those who have made significant contributions to the Latino community. Past awardees have included Congressman Michael Castle, Wilmington Mayor James Baker, and many other community leaders.

Creativity, energy and absolute determination have enriched Carlos de los Ramos’ career advocating for and assisting Delaware’s Latino community. After graduating from the University of Cuenca in Ecuador with a degree in journalism, Mr. de los Ramos came to study English at the University of Delaware.

That’s when he connected with the Latin American Community Center, where he contributed his talents for 20 years before joining AARP Delaware as associate state director for community outreach. At the Latin American Community Center, Mr. de los Ramos managed programs including workforce development, prevention and advocacy, and senior services, before becoming Vice President of Public Relations and Development.

In his spare time, Mr. de los Ramos produced and directed Raices, a program of Latin American music and dance at the Grand Opera House. He also hosted the Latin Beat radio program, named Best of Delaware in 2009; and he currently hosts Comcast Newsmakers en Espanol. Mr. de los Ramos has served on the WHYY Community Advisory Board, the Board of Overseers of the Delaware College of Art and Design (DCAD) and the Board of Directors of Henrietta Johnson Medical Center and the Delaware Help Line. He holds a certificate in Organizational Management & Leadership from the Institute for HIV Prevention Leadership through the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).  Mr. de los Ramos has been named one of Delaware Valley’s Most Influential Latino Leaders.

The staff and volunteers at AARP Delaware are pleased to have Mr. de los Ramos as part of their winning team.

"Carlos's leadership with the Latino community is exceptional," said AARP State Director Lucretia Young. "It is important for AARP to be a good resource in all our communities. We are looking forward to Carlos helping us continue to forge that path well into the future."
