AARP’s Sheridan Chapter Nets 700 Pounds of Food Donations During Souper Bowl

Give it a week and the Sheridan community will come through for its own. AARP’s Sheridan Chapter netted 700 pounds of donated food in just five days through its annual Souper Bowl food drive, last week.

The food drive is in its fifth year and asks community members to donate food into one of two donation bins reflecting the donors pick to win the Super Bowl. The bins, which were decorated by the Sheridan Retired Teachers Association, were placed at Sheridan’s YMCA, Sheridan Junior High School, Heritage Towers (a senior housing complex), John C. Shiffer High School, and The Hub (our Senior Center).

Sheridan’s donors proved savvy prognosticators, as donations into bins decorated in the theme of the Philadelphia Eagles outpaced those decorated in the blue and red of the New England Patriots.

“Those of us in the local AARP chapter are just glad we can help in some way,” Said Schatz. “If there is a real need in the community, and there is, we are proud to jump in.”

The 700 pounds of food collected and donated to a local food bank, as well as the Salvation Army, was over 200 pounds more than was donated a year ago. Clarence Montano headed up the Souper Bowl drive, along with the help of fellow AARP Sheridan Chapter member, Wayne Schatz and Nancy Drummond, who collected the donation baskets.
