Advocacy/Grassroots Internship at AARP Idaho

The AARP Idaho Office, located in Boise, has an opening for a legislative intern! This is a paid position. AARP advocacy and grassroots interns are provided legislative education in both state and federal political spheres and gain first-hand knowledge of the Idaho state legislature. Our advocacy work for the 50+ population gives interns exposure to real-world applications.

At the AARP Idaho state office, interns play a vital role in the development of advocacy and outreach campaigns. They learn firsthand how one of the largest non-profit organizations, dedicated to enriching the lives of older Americans, works, develops, and conveys its social impact message to more than 177,000 members across the state.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Track bills of interest through the legislative process
  • Track campaign issues, in particular Social Security, Work and Save, Medicare and Caregiving
  • Train, manage and provide support for volunteer teams
  • Plan and coordinate outreach events
  • Pull together data and statistics for meetings
  • Attend meetings and take notes as needed
  • Participate in relevant conference calls and take notes as needed
  • Event and project management with excellent organizational skills.
  • Assist with the recruitment of volunteers for staffing of community based activities.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of individuals with varied backgrounds and goals (volunteers, community leaders, partner organizations and vendors)
  • Serve as a representative of AARP at community sponsored activities.
  • Additional support duties as assigned

Candidate must be self-motivated, collaborative, be able to learn quickly and take directions well.  Must be able to work independently and make decisions.  The primary nature of interaction is coordinative with AARP Idaho state office staff and volunteers.  The intern is a vital supportive role to AARP Idaho’s strategic projects.  The intern will work directly with the Associate State Director for Advocacy to complete tasks related to dashboard goals.
