The AARP Virginia Scam Jam plays an important role in educating the public about fraud and identity theft in an effort to tackle fraud at all levels across Virginia. Following the success of the Roanoke Scam Jam, AARP Virginia is gearing up to host another event in Virginia Beach October 16. Stop by and learn how you can protect yourself and your loved ones from becoming a target or victim of today’s scammers.
People with disabilities are often left under the care of a guardian who is appointed to make decisions on their behalf. However, guardianship is not the best choice for everyone. It is important that those with disabilities are given the opportunity to make their own decisions whenever possible. AARP Virginia and the Virginia Elder Rights Coalition invite you to hear Jonathan Martinis discuss Supported Decision-Making, an important alternative to guardianship, September 10.

The 29 th Annual Caregivers Conference - “Prepare to Care: Getting Your Ducks in a Row” - aims to equip family caregivers, volunteers and professionals with the tools to be better prepared to care for a loved one. Join AARP Virginia and the Northern Virginia Dementia Care Consortium Members November 11 to learn how you can better manage life as a caregiver.
Roanoke _ The need for Meals on Wheels continues to grow rapidly in the Roanoke Valley. More routes have been added and thus more volunteers are needed to fill these routes. It takes 40 volunteers every day to deliver meals to 600 homebound seniors in our community.

According to a report released by Feeding America®, more than 8 million Baby Boomers age 50 to 64 are turning to charitable food assistance to make ends meet. “Baby Boomers and Beyond: Facing Hunger After Fifty,” was made possible by a grant from AARP Foundation and focuses on the main challenges facing boomers including: lack of employment, housing instability, poor health and unpaid medical bills. AARP Virginia is committed to ending hunger amongst adults 50+ and will be hosting its 2015 Statewide Food Drive September 11-20.
