Beacon Celebration of the Arts Contest Launches in April

Beacon_Celebration_AARPDC

In cooperation with The Beacon newspaper, AARP DC is cosponsoring the Beacon Celebration of the Arts contest for amateur artists 50 and older in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. The contest has four categories—painting, photography, poetry, and sculpture/3D (including pottery, jewelry, textile arts and more).

Artists can begin submitting entries online on April 1, 2018, which is when we will reveal the submission portal.  The entry period ends in June. There is a $10 entry fee per piece and a limit of three pieces per category. Winners will be announced in September 2018, with awards, cash prizes and opportunities to exhibit in local galleries.

Please do not submit works created before the age of 50.

AARP DC will sponsor 16 entries. If you would like a sponsored entry, do one or both of the following between February 25 and May 1, 2018, and receive up to 2 sponsored entries:

  • Follow AARP DC on Twitter and tweet the following: I'm a proud #DC50Plus artist. Thanks, @AARPDC for sponsoring my entry in @the_beacons Celebration of the Arts contest.
  • Like AARP DC on Facebook and send us a Facebook message letting us know you'd like a free entry.

HOW TO GET STARTED

STEP ONE

Give some thought to trying your hand at a new art or craft, or returning to one you used to enjoy.
Some ideas: watercolors, sketching, oil painting, jewelry making, pottery, sculpture, digital photography, poetry — the list is virtually endless.

STEP TWO

Take a class, find a mentor, visit a studio, go to a “paint night,” or otherwise experience the power of self-expression through art. Find something that really sparks your interest.

STEP THREE

When you have one or more works you are proud of, enter our art competition—open only to amateurs age 50 and over throughout the Baltimore, Howard County and Greater Washington areas. The competition will start accepting entries on April 1, 2018.

Now start creating!
