Charlie Wagener named State President of AARP Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK — Charlie Wagener has been selected as AARP Arkansas’ new State President.

State President is AARP’s highest volunteer position, representing about 310,000 AARP members in Arkansas. In partnership with the State Director, volunteers and staff, the State President helps position AARP in Arkansas to achieve the organization’s vision, mission and strategic priorities.

Wagener served as AARP Arkansas’ Lead Volunteer for Advocacy for the last two-and-a-half-years, working with the Associate State Director for Advocacy to plan and coordinate AARP Arkansas’ advocacy priorities, events and other activities.

Earlier this year, Wagener accompanied State Director Herb Sanderson on visits with members of Arkansas’ six-person congressional delegation on Capitol Hill to discuss priority issues for AARP, notably keeping Social Security strong for current and future generations and support for Arkansas’ 452,000 family caregivers.

As Lead Volunteer for Advocacy, Wagener also led the “A Team,” AARP Arkansas’ team of volunteer advocates who are particularly active during legislative sessions and election campaigns. He received AARP Arkansas’ 2015 Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his outstanding volunteer leadership.

A native of the Washington, D.C., area, Wagener graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. He served 27 years in the U.S. Army (10 Active & 17 Reserve) and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Computer Science and worked in information technology for more than 30 years with such companies as IBM and Oracle. A member of AARP since 1997, Wagener and his wife, Diane, reside near Beebe.

“Charlie was selected as our next State President based on his past volunteer work, proven leadership skills and experience as well as his enthusiasm to champion positive social change to enhance the quality of life for all as we age,” Sanderson said.

Wagener succeeds immediate past State President Nan Selz of Little Rock, who served with distinction for the prior two years.
