With the tax filing deadline looming, AARP Legal Counsel for the Elderly (LCE) is reminding district residents they may be eligible for a tax credit of up to $1,000 to help with housing costs.

Available to both homeowners and renters, the credit could help some residents avoid eviction, foreclosure or utility shutoffs.

Once available only to people with up to $20,000 adjusted gross income per year, the credit has been extended to those with up to $50,000 a year—or $60,000 for those 70 and older. To be eligible, you must have lived in your home or rental throughout 2016.

Low-income residents who do not need to file a tax return can call LCE at 202-434-2120. For help with tax returns, see information about AARP Foundation Tax-Aide.
