Denver, CO – (September 26, 2014) – In response to the growing needs of Colorado’s baby boomers, a series of free, public educational workshops on aging and home health are being offered along the Front Range this Fall, 2014 (dates listed below), from long term care retirement specialists in conjunction with non-profit sponsors and public facilities.

Jim Brown, a speaker and senior advisor to The Council on Aging for Arapahoe, Jefferson and Douglas Counties, said “for retirees who want to learn about aging and home health options; these seminars offer valuable insights.  The number one concern of baby boomers seems to be outliving their income resources and health care.”

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) is the nation’s leading nonprofit service and advocacy organization representing older adults and the community organizations that serve them.  Their goal is to improve the health and economic security of 10 million older adults by 2020.  The Arapahoe County Council on Aging ( www.accoa.info) was established by the Older Americans Act of 1965.  Their mission is to identify the needs, concerns, and issues of adults (60 and older) and to advise and advocate for services that best meet their needs.

According to the Colorado Department of Human Services website, “Colorado has one of the fastest growing aging populations in the U.S.  From the years 2011 to 2021, the number of older adults in Colorado will increase 54%.” ( Colorado Commission on Aging, 2014.)

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, “Colorado is home to more than 5 million people. Of these, approximately: 1.5 million (30%) are over age 50; 820,000 (16%) are over 60; 370,000 (7%) are over 70; and 140,000 (3%) are over 80. The proportion of females rises with each age group to 63% of the 80+ group.”  ( http://www.aoa.gov , June, 2012.)The Bureau further estimates that 21% of Colorado’s population will be over 60 by the year 2030, an increase of 32% percent from 2012.

Centenarians are a fast growing segment of the American population.  Four out of every five centenarians is a woman.  Over 650 Coloradans are 100 years and older.  In 2021, the U.S. Census Bureau predicts there will be more than 1,100 Coloradans over age 100.  Also, by the year 2050 there will be over 850,000 centenarians in the United States.

The workshops will cover planning tips, strategies and laws to avoid the dilemma of spending down the hard-earned nest egg when a medical crisis occurs.  Long-term care costs are one of the main reasons that retirees deplete their savings and lose assets.  Speakers will represent alternatives for retirees to purchasing long-term care insurance.  No products will be endorsed or sold.  Solutions offered include insights about 2014 estate plan laws that may help protect families and their aging lives ones.  Workshops are free and open to the public.
