AARP in St. Louis’ Trail Trekkers will host its second annual Veterans Day hike, a roughly three-mile walk beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, at Jefferson Barracks Park, 345 North Road, St. Louis.

Participants will meet at the park’s Gold Star Pavilion and begin hiking at about 9:15 a.m. Everyone is asked to bring at least three nonperishable food items or toiletries to donate to the barracks’ food bank, which aids service members and their families, veterans and military retirees.

“By connecting with the Jefferson Barracks Food Pantry, we’re making it easy for our members and their family and friends to say ‘thank you’ to our current and former service members and their families,” said Sheila Holm, community outreach director for AARP in St. Louis.

People can also donate without participating in the hike. Pantry volunteers will be at the park to receive donations between 9 and 11 a.m.

The pantry is most in need of baby items, toothpaste, toilet paper, first-aid supplies, laundry detergent and bathroom cleaner.

Last year the Veterans Day hike drew about 120 people, Holm said, and AARP wants to surpass that number this year. Hikers must register online or call 877-926-8300 toll-free.  All ages and AARP members and non-members are welcome!
