Scammers claim to be government officials to steal your money or your identity.  Here’s what to watch for:

Scammers’ Tactics

  • It’s the IRS: You owe taxes and must pay immediately or face arrest!
  • It’s Social Security: Your number was compromised and you need to take immediate action!
  • Free Money: You qualify for a federal grant!
  • You’ve Won: You’ve won millions in a federally-supervised lottery!

What You Should Know

  • The government will not contact you out of the blue.
  • The government will not contact you by text or email.
  • The government does not accept payment by wire transfer or gift card.
  • The government does not oversee lotteries or sweepstakes.
  • There is no such thing as the Federal Grants Administration.
