Most older Americans want to age in place, staying in their home and community, according to the AARP Public Policy Institute. But to do that, residents need safe, walkable streets and sidewalks.
That’s the goal of a Memphis project designed to improve the area near the Josephine K. Lewis Senior Center.
Boosted by a $21,040 Community Challenge grant from AARP, the project is meant to promote physical activity and overall accessibility to the center by repairing 1,500 square feet of sidewalk, installing six informational signs and creating a rest area along the nearby Walk-’n-Wheel trail.
AARP awarded $1.3 million in Community Challenge grants to 129 projects, including at least one in each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
