Greenbrier East High School’s Abby Morgan named AARP WV/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week

Spartans’ volleyball standout, student athlete earns statewide honor

 

Abby Morgan of Greenbrier East High School has been selected as the AARP West Virginia/MetroNews Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of November 2.

A senior, Abby is a 4.0 g.p.a. AP Honors student. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta math honor society. Her school activities include Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is the daughter of Bryan and Cindy Morgan of Lewisburg.

A three-year varsity letterwinner for Coach Matt Sauvage’s Spartans volleyball team, Abby is among the state individual leaders this season in aces served and digs. A starter at the libero position, Abby was a member of the Spartans’ 2013 WVSSAC Class AAA State Runner-Up squad and earned All-Tournament Team honors at last year’s State Tournament.

On a community level, Abby is actively engaged in volunteer and service activities in Greenbrier County through Trinity United Methodist Church and various community groups. She has served as a volunteer with the Young Life Youth Organization and The Greenbrier Classic.

Following her graduation this year, Abby plans to attend Marshall University and pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in the medical/health care field.

During the 2014 Fall Sports season, one high school student athlete will be selected each week as the AARP West Virginia Scholar Athlete of the Week and recognized on the popular West Virginia MetroNews High School GameNight program, which airs 9:30 p.m. – midnight each Friday night on nearly 40 radio stations across the Mountain State .

West Virginia student athletes in Grades 11 and 12 with a minimum 3.0 grade point average are eligible for the award. Nominees should excel in one or more athletic program, and be active within their community through service and community involvement. Nomination forms may be submitted online at http://wvmetronews.com/scholar-athlete-of-the-week. The deadline for 2014 nominations is November 14.
