AARP Seeks 2018 Andrus Award Nominations for Community Service

AARP is now accepting nominations for its 2018 Hawaii Andrus Award for Community Service, which honors Hawaii individuals age 50+ who are sharing their experience, talent, and skills to enrich the lives of their community members.

“AARP Hawaii is excited to shine a light on individuals 50 years and older who are using what they’ve learned in life to make a difference in the lives around them,” said Barbara Kim Stanton, AARP Hawai‘i state director

Nominations will be evaluated by a volunteer committee with representation from Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, and Kauai.  The evaluations will be based on how the volunteer’s service has improved the community, supported AARP’s vision and mission, and inspired other volunteers during 2017 or earlier. The award recipient will be announced in early Fall. The winner will be invited to AARP’s annual volunteer recognition luncheon on Oahu, receive a crystal award.  Additionally, AARP Hawai‘i will donate $500 to an organization of the recipient’s choice.

AARP Hawaii Andrus Award for Community Service nominees must meet the following eligibility requirements:

• Nominee must be 50 years or older.
• The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must have been performed on a volunteer basis, without pay.
• The achievements, accomplishments, or service on which the nomination is based must reflect AARP’s vision and mission.
• Couples or partners who perform service together are also eligible; however, teams are not
• This is not a posthumous award.
• Service must have occurred in 2017 or earlier.

The AARP Andrus Award for Community Service is an annual awards program developed to honor individuals whose service is a unique and valuable contribution to society.  Last year, AARP recognized 51 outstanding individuals and couples from around the country, including Bill and Lena Staton, of Maui, for their service to Hawai‘i veterans and the community.
