Health care reform talk to Chinese American group 'a happening'

Andy on ACA at ACA

AARP Michigan and the Association of Chinese Americans teamed up June 24 on a unique multicultural experience.

Andy Farmer, AARP Michigan Associate State Director for Health and Supportive Services, delivered a 90-minute program on the ins and outs of the Affordable Care Act at the Chinese Community Center in Madison Heights.

A Chinese language interpeter translated Farmer's talk for the 85 Chinese Americans in attendance.

The interpreter also was on hand to translate one-on-one questions after the program.

From all reports, the event was seamless and educational for everyone involved.

Lisa Whitmore Davis, AARP Michigan Associate State Director for Multicultural Outreach, organized the event with the Association of Chinese Americans.

"We're excited about our partnership with the Chinese American community," she said. "We sincerely hope this is the beginning of long-lasting relationship."

Farmer called the event "an accomplishment, a happening. This is a feat of  Lisa Whitmore Davis'  multicultural outreach leadership with national relevance."

The Association of Chinese Americans, founded in 1972, is the Detroit chapter of the OCA.  The association  is dedicated to advancing the social, political and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans in the United States.
