Mala

Funny, brutally honest, and ultimately cathartic, Mala puts a sharp focus on what it means to put our loved ones first, right to the very end, and what happens when we strive to be good but don’t always succeed.

Named one of the best plays of the year by The Boston Globe, WBUR’s ARTery, and DigBoston when it premiered at ArtsEmerson, this powerful one-woman show written by and featuring Huntington Playwright-in-Residence Melinda Lopez (Sonia Flew, Becoming Cuba) dances between doctors and urgent 911 calls, a mother’s growing frailty, and a daughter’s quest for grace — all set during an epic Boston winter.
Originally produced by ArtsEmerson

A Night with Janis Joplin

A Night With Janis Joplin is a musical journey celebrating Janis Joplin and her biggest musical influences – trailblazers like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone and Bessie Smith, all of whom inspired Joplin to become one of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s greatest legends. Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Joplin exploded onto the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Her unmistakable voice, filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort, made Joplin a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. Audiences will enjoy Joplin’s favorites, including “Piece of My Heart,” “Cry Baby,” “Me and Bobby McGee,” and many others.

Through a Portagee Gate

Culture*Park Theatre was originally commissioned by the UMass Dartmouth Center for Portuguese Studies to adapt and present “Through a Portagee Gate, a play.” This full-length play dramatizes the immigrant experience framed by a dynamic father/son relationship. The play depicts the story of Jose Felix, who came to America from Portugal in 1915 in pursuit of the American Dream, with nothing but the coat on his back. His son Carlos, the second protagonist and storyteller of the play, is a teacher in California under the name Charlie, denying his roots and yearning for his own “American” identity. There, in his elementary school classroom, a Portuguese-speaking custodian becomes an ironic confidant. This epic story, adapted from the renowned memoir of the same title by Charles Reis Felix, is alive with humor, wit and sincerity drawn from the human experience and heritage that is undeniably part of the Southcoast’s fabric.

Bucky Pizzarelli and the Vaughn Monroe Orchestra

The Vaughn Monroe Orchestra transports the audience to October 1949, just after World War II. Under the direction of Dan Gabel, the orchestra performs Monroe’s hits along with the Moon Maids vocal group, a dancing duo, a comedian and skits from the Camel Caravan radio and TV show. “Racing with the Moon,” “There, I’ve Said It Again,” “Ballerina,” “Let it Snow” and “Ghost Riders in the Sky” will all be heard using the original hand-written manuscripts through special arrangement with the Monroe family and New England Conservatory. Original band member and legendary guitarist Mr. Bucky Pizzarelli joins the outfit in a truly spectacular event presented by WICN 90.5FM.

For more than seven decades, the legendary Bucky Pizzarelli has had a stellar career. As “The complete jazz musician,” he has been a fixture in jazz and the studios since the 1940s. The list of big bands and vocalists with whom Bucky has performed and recorded reads like a veritable who’s who of jazz. One of the era’s most solid rhythm players, Pizzarelli was in high demand, playing and touring with Benny Goodman, Zoot Sims, Bud Freeman, Stephane Grappelli, The Tonight Show Band and Frank Sinatra. Most recently, he recorded with Paul McCartney on his new Grammy® Award winning album, “Kisses on the Bottom.” At the age of 91, he still tours and performs all over the world. He lives in Saddle River, New Jersey, with his wife of nearly 70 years, Ruth.

The legendary guitarist got his start at age 17 playing with Vaughn Monroe. The Pizzarelli sound is unmistakable, and the beloved guitarist has developed a very personal style that sets him apart. Now, for the first time since 1953, the rhythm guitar master returns as a special guest with the new Vaughn Monroe Orchestra.
