Avoid Frauds and Scams After a Natural Disaster

Scam alert road sign

As we recover from recent flooding and other severe weather, AARP Iowa wants to help you steer clear of lurking scam artists. Remember these important tips and advice on avoiding post-disaster scams from the AARP Fraud Watch Network.

Need to Know Tips:
Choose Your Donations Wisely
The FTC offers guidance on how to avoid charity scams. Be aware of criminals’ tactics: using names similar to real charities or making vague claims about how your donation will be used.
Be Skeptical of "Too-Good-To-Be-True"
Some people may offer you immediate clean-up or debris removal, demand upfront payment, but have no intention of following through with the work. Don’t believe promises that aren’t in writing.
Be Cautious With Your Payments
Never pay a contractor by wire transfer, gift card or cash. Before you pay, ask for identification, licenses and proof of insurance. You should never make a final payment until the work is done and you’re satisfied.
Guard Your Personal Information
Only scammers will say they’re some type of government official and then demand money or your credit card, bank account number or Social Security number.
Don't Pay to Qualify for FEMA
Don’t pay anyone to help you qualify or apply for FEMA relief. Remember that FEMA does not charge application fees to apply for funds. If someone wants money to help you apply for relief, it’s probably a scam.
Report Any Disaster-Relief Scams
If you suspect that you’ve been targeted by a disaster-related scam, report it. Contact the Office of the Iowa Attorney General's Consumer Protection HERE or by calling 888-777-4590.
