AARP Texas is celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month with events across the state.

The month-long celebration, deemed so by an act of Congress, runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 each year. According to the Library of Congress, the occasion “celebrates and recognizes the contributions Hispanic Americans have made to American society and culture.”

Hispanic Heritage Month dates back to 1968 and was originally a week-long observation. It became a month in length in 1988.

Hispanic Heritage Month coincides with the dates of independence for multiple countries in Latin America, as the Library of Congress points out. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua mark their independence on Sept. 15, while Mexico does so on Sept. 16 and Chile on Sept. 18.

AARP Texas invites you to join us at events in September and October, including in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.

Brownsville

A discussion about Día de los Muertos featuring Dr. Tony Zavaleta will take place Oct. 30 at the Brownsville Event Center. Zavaleta formerly served as dean of the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College. Click here to sign up.

Dallas

The Mariachi Moon Festival just south of downtown Dallas on Oct. 6 will feature the debut of a mural coordinated by AARP and created with the help of volunteers. The event celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival—a Vietnam holiday—and Hispanic Heritage Month. Click here for more information on the Mariachi Moon Festival, and click here to see how you can get involved in the creation of the mural before it debuts.

Houston

Miller Outdoor Theatre is playing host to a free Sept. 30 concert with Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández. AARP members can get a free blanket at the AARP table while supplies last. Click here for more information and to RSVP.

San Antonio

AARP’s events in San Antonio include a Sept. 25 gardening workshop on how to grow salsa herbs, a Sept. 27 drive-in film screening of Disney/Pixar’s “Coco,” and “Celebrando con AARP” on Oct. 7 with live music, food and games. Click here for more information on these events.
