"With Friends Like These," Picks Up Film Awards

It's not everyday a small non-profit wins a film award but we've been lucky enough to win two of them! Recently, The Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA) honored our short film, "With Friends Like These," with two 2015 Communicator Awards! We're excited to say that the film won Silver for "Online Documentary" and "Online Video - Activism." You can view the film, directed by award-winning filmmaker, John Martin, below.

Last summer a few of us headed up to Aroostook County to spend the day picking vegetables with Dale Flewelling on his organic farm just outside of Houlton, Maine. Flewelling founded Friends of Aroostook (FOA), a non profit venture aiming to end senior hunger in the state of Maine. FOA annually donates more than 200,000 pounds of freshly grown, county-nurtured fruits and veggies to some of Maine's poorest and most remote communities and Meals on Wheels programs.

We filmed our day-long experience on FOA's farm and spoke to a handful of folks who had turned out to pick vegetables not only for themselves, but for others in need. Some drove over three hours one-way, from some of the most rural communities in Maine, just to be able to pick fresh vegetables to bring home.

A big thank you to the AIVA for recognizing the great work of Flewelling and FOA and we hope more folks have a chance to see this film as we head into the peak growing season here in Maine![/youtube]
