Meal Pack and Service Fair Combats 50+ Hunger

The AARP Foundation is partnering with the Miami Dolphins to fight hunger in South Florida by providing meals for older adults.

About one in 10 Floridians age 40-plus are at risk of hunger, with much higher rates among people living with disabilities, minority groups or the widowed, divorced or separated. So AARP Foundation is teaming up with the Miami Dolphins to fight senior hunger in South Florida.

On May 1, AARP Foundation  will partner with the Miami Dolphins for the Million Meal Pack and Community Service Fair. This is an opportunity to help food insecure seniors in the South Florida area by packing meals to be delivered to Miami-Dade, Monroe, Broward and Palm Beach County. Attendees will have a chance to win Dolphin-related prizes, including tickets to a 2016 home game, as we work to foster better living for the 50+ community.

This is the third time that the AARP Foundation and the Miami Dolphins have combatted hunger in the South Florida area. In previous years, more than 4,000 volunteers, including Miami Dolphins players, packed more than 1 million meals in nine hours, creating the largest volunteer network in Florida. The Million Meal Pack and Community Service Fair will be held on Sunday, May 1, at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale.

The AARP Foundation, the charitable arm of AARP, has selected fighting senior hunger as one of four areas of focus.  The foundation  works with its partners to consolidate, integrate and coordinate action from all sectors in a more efficient way.

AARP Foundation and the Miami Dolphins aim to help South Florida older adults meet their basic needs. By being a force for change on the most serious issues Americans 50+ face today—housing, hunger, income and isolation—and working with local volunteers and organizations, we can help reach more people, strengthen communities and help make resources go further for those struggling.
