AARP New Jersey Applauds Governor Murphy’s Decision to Hold Hybrid Voting Process for the November 3 General Election

Calls for Broad, Statewide Campaign to Educate Voters on Upcoming Changes

Statement from AARP New Jersey State Director Stephanie Hunsinger

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (August 14, 2020) – “On behalf of our nearly 1.3 million Garden State members, AARP New Jersey applauds Governor Murphy’s announcement today that the state will employ a hybrid process for voting in the November 3 general election, including a greatly expanded mail-in ballot process.

Sending mail-in ballots with stamped, self-addressed, return envelopes to every registered eligible voter and ensuring safe in-person polling locations will ensure that Americans 50+ – from election workers to working parents to family caregivers – can vote safely.

AARP New Jersey is also calling on the Murphy Administration to wage a broad, statewide campaign to educate all voters on their voting options. Especially as turnout is expected to be higher than the primary election, an education campaign is necessary to minimize confusion around these changes.  Information should be available on state, county and municipal websites. The campaign should include public service announcements, paid, earned and social media. Similar to New Jersey’s current COVID-19 information page, the campaign should include an easy-to-access, statewide “Voting 2020” page.

AARP is fighting to protect voters 50+ and make their voice heard on the issues that matter – protecting Social Security and Medicare, lowering prescription drug prices, protecting residents living in long-term care facilities and ensuring everyone can vote safely from home or in-person.”
