October Forums Set The Stage for an Age-Friendly Fort Worth

With people staying healthy and active longer, communities have to adapt. There’ll be need for more safe, walkable streets, better housing and transportation options, and opportunities for civic engagement. The AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities gives cities guidance on how to reach their goals in becoming great places for people of all ages.

Fort Worth is among Texas cities rising to the challenge. An “Age-Friendly Fort Worth Action Plan” is taking shape, and the proposal is set to go to the Fort Worth City Council for approval as early as Dec. 6.

Crafted from recommendations of Fort Worth residents and area experts, the plan touches on core topics of age-friendliness: outdoor spaces and buildings, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic participation and employment, communication and information, and community support and health services.

Community input is still needed. A series of events is being held around Fort Worth to help residents take part in the process, including public forums on Oct. 4 and Oct. 11 hosted by AARP Texas.
