It’s been just about two weeks since I attended the AARP Ohio 2018 Volunteer Summit and I’m still feeling the excitement. A fellow Cincinnati volunteer had to convince me to make the trip and I’m glad she did.
Americans 50+ are the nation’s most powerful voting bloc – and it’s important we stay that way. The power of older voters is real, but many of them don’t vote in most midterm elections. In the 2016 Presidential Election, 2.9 million Ohioans age 50+ voted but in the 2014 Midterm Election, only 2.1 million Ohioans age 50+ voted. That’s a difference of almost 900,000 drop-off 50+ voters. AARP wants to change that.
It’s National Volunteer Week! During this week AARP in Ohio pauses to recognize the amazing things our volunteers throughout the state do for those 50+. From visiting elected officials to helping people protect themselves from fraud to bringing caregivers together for information and support, our volunteers make a positive impact in and for their communities every day.

From July 26 th through August 6 th, nearly 170 volunteers from around Ohio traveled to the 2017 Ohio State Fair in Columbus to staff the AARP booth. We couldn’t have asked for a more energized and enthusiastic team of Buckeyes to interact with fair goers about issues that impact all Ohioans.
AARP Ohio will host a booth at the Ohio State Fair July 26-Aug. 6. Thousands of people are expected to stop by the air-conditioned space to cool off and pick up AARP information and giveaways.
Here in Columbus our office overlooks the Ohio Statehouse and today, even with the frigid effects of the record-breaking polar vortex, the turnout to pay respect to Ohio’s own Honorable Senator John Glenn is a steady stream, expected to reach the thousands before the evening is over. AARP Ohio joins the nation and especially our great state of Ohio, as we celebrate the extraordinary life of Senator Glenn.
We have big plans in Cincinnati next year, and you can be part of the fun! In 2014, AARP members throughout the Cincinnati area will be invited to participate in a variety of events, including educational, volunteer and local event discounts for educational and cultural offerings.
