Older, and Safer, Drivers Abound

More and more people age 50+ are moving to Delaware. And most of them are hitting the road and doing it safely. In fact, we know that older drivers are safe drivers. The incidence of older driver crashes and fatalities has declined steadily. These older drivers are keeping their licenses longer and driving more often. We also know they are less likely to talk on a cellphone while driving or drive under the influence of alcohol.

When it comes to driving and other issues, AARP listens to its members and non-members. An AARP survey of active and experienced drivers age 50+ revealed that driving is very important to older Americans. The respondents claimed that they depend on driving to get where they need to go. They also recognized that the driving environment has changed over time, and they understand the impact of technology in cars. The 50+ driver is also knowledgeable when it comes to the basic rules of the road, according to the survey.

That’s why AARP Driver Safety is a popular option for helping to ensure that people 50+ drive safer and longer. AARP Driver Safety first launched in 1979 to help to keep older drivers independent, safe and confident while on the road. Today, AARP Driver Safety continues to meet the needs of older drivers through leading educational programs that include the AARP Smart Driver™ Course, Driving Resource Center, CarFit and We Need to Talk.
